Our Attic Door

We use an attic door to access our attic from our office area in our home. It is a standard 2 ft. 6 inch door, which is also known as a 30 inch six-panel door. Last summer, we discovered there was a large amount of heat getting into the office from the attic.

A thermal temperature reader displayed a 30 degree difference between the walls and the door. It was 120 degrees in the attic and 90 degrees in the office. No wonder the office was always hot!

The fix was relatively easy.

  • Some seals around the door were added to get rid of any air flow. See picture to the right; and

  • A sheet of 2 inch thick styrofoam was glued to the attic side of the door. See the two pictures below

Now the temperature difference between the door and the adjacent walls is within just a few degrees. The two pictures below show the temperature on the door on both sides after the fix. The temperature in the office stays where we want it to be so we stay comfortable.
