Bathroom Shower Wall Material?

by Mike & Pat
(Warrens, Wisconsin, USA)

Question: We are doing new construction and building a custom master bath which includes a large handicap accessable shower which will be fully tiled. What would you suggest the material be for the walls that the tiles adhere to? (If other than sheetrock?)

Answer: What I would suggest is HardiBacker or Wonderboard. Make sure you place a shower pan liner (sheet material bent to comform to the shape of the floor) between the tiles and the HardiBacker or Wonderboard in the shower area. Make sure you are in compliance with local codes and standards. Here is an article about material to use in the bathroom. Greenboard and Cement Board.
