Classic Beer Can Chicken Recipe

Beer Can Chicken

Below is our beer can chicken recipe.
It works great in any smoker.

Serves 8 normal or 4 hungry people

4 - Chickens (3 1/2 pound whole fresh fryers)
1 - 8 oz. pkg. BBQ rib rub
4 - 12 oz. Cans of Beer - half full
2 - tablespoons olive oil per chicken
1 - tablespoon (per beer can) minced garlic
1/8 cup - table sugar

  • Wash beer cans. Wash roost.

  • Punch holes in top 1/3 of the beer cans.

  • Open beer cans, remove 1/2 contents - leaving 6 ounces or half. You can also substitute your favorite carbonated beverage. Ginger ale or Dr. Pepper is also good.

  • Put tablespoon of minced garlic in beer can.

  • Combine sugar with spice. Mix well.

  • Clean chickens thoroughly, inside and out. Remove unwanted parts.

  • Apply olive oil to chicken. Thin coating all over.

  • Insert can into roost.

  • Shake spice onto chicken. Even coating all over.

  • Place chicken cavity over beer can. Press down firmly.

  • Chickens should be straight up, facing handle.

  • Cook two (2) hours at 350 degrees, or until done - 180 degrees in breast and thigh. Use meat thermometer to test doneness. Do not undercook!

  • When done, leave chickens on roost, put roost on platter.

  • Carve and serve directly from roost.
