Black Mold – Are You Sure That's What It Is?

The media and the lawyers have everyone convinced black mold is a MAJOR problem.

The real problem is MOLD IS EVERYWHERE AND I MEAN EVERYWHERE! The very first thing you need to do is become educated in exactly what type of problem you have. The severity of the problem will determine your course of action.

Mold can be identified and corrected.

Mold can take a variety of appearances. It can be black, red, gray, brown, green, white or orange and any combination of the above.

Black mold by its latin name is Stachybotrys. This mold is commonly dark, slimy and greenish-black.

While all molds are not bad, all molds should be treated.

The most common source of mold is water. Find the source and kill the mold. Without moisture, the mold can not live. Very toxic molds typically develop from water leaks and while black mold is less common than other molds, it is not rare.

Many of the inspection companies are afraid of lawsuits, so everything they find is mold requiring remediation. There is an army of lawyers looking to find a lawsuit and the mold problems are making the construction industry afraid.

Mold is both good and bad for us. Just be careful and know what to look for.

Make sure that if you have a mold problem:

  • You hire a contractor that is certified by a national organization and has a certificate in good standing. This contractor should be licensed by your state and carry insurance.

  • Ask how many hours the class was and how extensive was the test to become certified. Also, ask does he/she stay current with annual classes for recertification?

  • Be afraid of the contractor that enters your door and says: “I can tell by the smell this is bad.” Or something along that line. There are too many people out there that sent in a check and received a certificate back showing they know what they are doing. It is called certificate mills.

  • Make sure the person you are talking to has references and call those references.

Be careful, as they may simply pour bleach on the problem, collect their money and run.

The cause of the problem should always be fixed first. By the way, bleach will not cure a mold problem, it just hides it for a while.
