Building Materials For Shelter
Custom Search
The same goes for building materials as it does for food. When a hurricane was announced in South Florida, everyone would run to the big boxes and buy as much building materials, such as plywood and 2x4’s, as they could put their hands on to board up their windows. The stragglers got nothing. Years ago the homes were squatty low profile single story concrete block buildings with concrete roof tiles. They were built to withstand hurricanes because weather forecasting was not as good as it is today. Those storms that came up suddenly were always a surprise. There was a long period of no hurricanes hitting South Florida, so the building codes were relaxed. Then along came Andrew. Mother nature showed us who was in charge.
There is no such thing as a weather-proof building. What really counts is just how well are we prepared and how fast can we get everything back to normal. The area we call home today has tornados every spring. Most are minor but occasionally along comes a major storm. The minor ones are a nuisance and life quickly becomes normal again. After a major tornado, it takes time for everyone to recover. The tornado we had last year has not completely been cleaned up. Most the blue roofs (roofs with tarps) are gone and roofs and shingles have been replaced. One of the commercial buildings in our town that was hit and destroyed is just now being rebuilt.
So remember to be as prepared as to your building materials as possible before an emergency!
