Ceiling Problems

Question from Steve: Hi, I've got a weird question for you about my ceiling problems. In the upstairs hallway, the ceiling has the attic right above it. Several months ago, I noticed patches showing up that looked like nails pushing thru. I had the ceiling spots repaired and the dry waller said he did not see any nails, but had to patch probably 10 holes. Now they are back in the same spots. Any ideas what causes this? Any idea what kind of repair person I would call? Just fyi, it is not from someone walking in the attic, at least the second time. Any help would be appreciated. Answer from Dave about the ceiling problems: Steve, Sounds to me like the drywall is expanding and contracting which is resulting in the pushed out spots you are seeing. When the weather changes from hot to cold and back again, drywall does funny things. Is there insulation above the ceiling as well as a vapor barrier right above the drywall? Does this happen ONLY in the hallway area? Typically, halls are only 3 or 4 ft wide and not usually prone to expansion like you describe. Let me know what you find. Answer from Steve: There is insulation above the ceiling. It only happens in the hallway with the exception of 1 or 2 in a bedroom. Have been here 7 yrs and it has only done this twice - about 6 months ago and now. Answer from Dave about the ceiling problems:
If you push on the drywall does it move up and down ever so slightly? It
sounds as if the screws or nails holding it up are loose. How about
temperature changes? Are you having any? Anything else in the house that has changed?
When you patch the holes, put new screws a few inches away from the old
fasteners to clamp everything in place.
