Clean Water During An Emergency

Will you have enough clean water? The average person must drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day to maintain the body. Plan to store enough water for three or more days for the number of people in your household.

Here is an idea that reverts back to disaster preparation years ago in South Florida. When a storm is approaching do the following:

  • Scrub the bathtub clean, rinse it out with bleach to kill bacteria and flush with water.
  • Fill it with water and add a teaspoon of bleach to kill any bacteria and keep it from growing.
  • Cover the tub with a piece of clean plastic sheeting to keep the pets out and keep the water clean enough to drink.
The average bathtub will hold between 32 to 44 gallons. Some larger tubs can hold up to 200 gallons. Do an inventory of what you have and go from that point.
