When you have your cooking recipes in hand and your cupboard stock is low, check this list for substitute ingredients in a pinch.
  • Allspice (1 teaspoon) = 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves;


  • Beer = Strong chicken broth, beef broth or mushroom broth;


  • Brown sugar (1 cup) = 1 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tablespoon molasses or dark corn syrup;


  • Buttermilk (1 cup for baking) = Mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice with 1 cup milk, let stand 5 minutes;

  • Cake flour (1 cup) = 7/8 cup all-purpose flour plus 2 tablespoons cornstarch;


  • Chili powder (1 tablespoon) = 2 teaspoons cumin, 1 teaspoon cayenne, 1 teaspoon oregano, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder;


  • Cornstarch (1 tablespoon) = 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour;


  • Cream (1 cup, half-and-half) = 1 1/2 tablespoons butter plus enough whole milk to equal 1 cup, or 1/2 cup light cream plus 1/2 cup whole milk;


  • Cream of tartar (1/2 teaspoon) = 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar;


  • Crame fraiche (1 cup) = 1/2 cup sour cream plus 1/2 cup heavy cream;


  • Oil = Applesauce (for baking purposes);


  • Red wine = Apple cider, beef broth or tomato juice


  • Sugar (granulated, 1 cup) = 2 cups powdered sugar, or 3/4 cup honey (with liquid in recipe reduced by 1/4 cup);


  • Vinegar = Lemon juice;


  • White wine = White grape juice, apple juice, apple cider, chicken broth;


  • Yogurt = Sour cream, buttermilk or cottage cheese blended smooth;
