Dessert Recipes

Here is the first of our apple dessert recipes

Apple Dumplings

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 6 apples
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
Combine sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg; add butter. Pare and core apples; cut into fourths or slice. Sift flour, salt and baking powder; cut in shortening. Add milk all at once. Stir until moistened. Roll 1/4 inch thick; cut in 5-inch squares. Arrange 4 pieces apple, or if sliced, 1 whole apple, on each square; sprinkle generously with additional sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; dot with additional butter. Fold corners to center; pinch edges together. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking pan. Pour syrup over all dumplings. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 35 minutes. May serve warm with milk. Yield: 6 dumplings.

Apple Strudel
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 glass milk
  • 4 apples, cut fine
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
Put flour on baking board; rub salt and 1 tablespoon butter into it. Scoop all in a heap; make a hole in the center. Put 1 egg in the hole; beat with spatula. Add remaining egg and milk; beat and work to make a stiff ball of dough. Work until dough is full of little blisters; set aside 20 minutes in a warm place. Roll dough very thin. Put apples on dough; sprinkle with sugar, finely ground nuts and remaining butter. Roll dough up; bake in a long tin for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Yield: 8 servings.

Banana Roll Ups
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 banana per serving, sliced
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
Cut shortening into flour as for pie crust. Beat egg with cream and salt; add to flour mixture. Form into soft ball; divide into 3 pieces. Roll out portions; cut into 6-inch squares. Put 1/2 banana inn each square. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Put on cookie sheet; bake at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes or until done. Top with caramel sauce or strawberries and whipped cream. Yield: 10-12 servings.






Dessert recipes can be worth the time it takes to make them.


Frozen Peach Torte
  • 2 cups well-mashed peaches, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup heavy cream, whipped
  • 1 cup macaroon cookies, coarsely crushed
Combine peaches, sugar and lemon juice; mix well. Fold in whipped cream. Place 1/2 crumbs in a 1-quart freezing tray. Pour in peach mixture. Top with remaining crumbs. Freeze until firm about 4 to 6 hours. Cut in squares; serve with a maraschino cherry on top for added color. Yield: 8 servings.






Dessert recipes are not hard to make.


Graham Cracker Dessert
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 12 marshmallows, cut fine
  • 2 3/4 oz. chocolate syrup
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, cut fine
  • 12 graham crackers, rolled fine
Cream together butter and sugar. Add egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in marshmallows, chocolate syrup and walnuts. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Put half of the rolled crackers in bottom of 9 x 9 inch pan; put filling over crumbs. Add remaining crumbs; put in refrigerator overnight. Serve with a dab of whipped cream. Yield: 8 servings.






I love dessert recipes with lemon in them.


Lemon Chess Tarts
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup margarine, melted
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons grated lemon rind
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • Unbaked pastry tart shells
Mix sugar, flour and cornmeal; add eggs. Mix margarine, milk, lemon rind and juice; add to egg and sugar mixture. Pour into tart shells. Bake in 375 degree oven for 30 minutes. Yield: 8 servings.






I love dessert recipes with pecans in them.


Pecan Fingers
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
Combine butter, flour and salt until crumbly. Press into long square cake pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Combine remaining ingredients. Spread over butter crust. Bake another 15 minutes at 375 degrees. Top with powdered sugar icing, if desired. Yield: 24 servings.

Powdered sugar icing is made up of 3 ingredients. They are powdered sugar, milk and vanilla. Put powdered sugar in a bowl. We will say 1/2 cup. Then keep adding milk while whisking until you get it to the consistency you want. Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla.
