Home Safety

Baking Soda How is everyone doing when it comes to home safety?

When was the last time you and your family had a practice fire drill?

You know the one when the alarm sounds and everyone knows what to do, where to go and where to meet outdoors to make sure everyone got out safely. I’ll bet for most the answer is "never".

Here are some interesting statistics:

  • 80% of the fires in the United States started in the home.
  • The majority of those fires started in the kitchen, laundry room, bathroom or bedroom.
  • In spite of all the new construction still going on in this country, the number of fire casualties has remained fairly constant since 2003.
  • The average ranges between 3,200 and 4,000 deaths each year.
  • The average number of reported fires during those years was appoximately 1.75 million. 1.75 million fires a year are a lot of fires!
  • Will your home be next?
  • Do you have a home safety list? Are you prepared?
Your home is very important.
  • Does your home have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers?
  • Do you have a home safety plan?
  • How about a first aid kit? No, I’m not talking about antiseptic and a box of band-aids in the medicine cabinet.
  • What do you know about mold? All mold is not necessarily bad. You just have to know what to look for. Spraying bleach on mold and painting over it will not solve the problem. Without getting rid of the source, the mold will grow right back.
In this section we will be talking about smoke detectors, how to test for radon, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, dryer vent safety and recognizing mold and its hazards.
