The Hot Water Heater or Water Heater

Custom Search

The hot water heater or water heater is the second largest user of energy in our homes. It is referred to by both names. It claims approximately 14% to 18% of your utility bill, whether it is electric or gas. So make sure you pay attention to the efficiently rating of the one you have in your home.

Several years ago, we noticed water running out from under the garage door. It was just a small trickle, but I still needed to check it out. I traced it back to the hot water heater. It is in our garage and I ever paid much attention to it because we were getting enough hot water.

It looked as if it was time for a replacement. The outside of the case was HOT, indicating the insulation was not very efficient.

When I pulled the unit out, I discovered the back of the water heater was split at the seam. After examining the unit, I came to the conclusion the unit had been installed after being dropped on the edge causing the split.

The leak was no where near the split which meant, the split did not cause the leak. Also, the split had been there for years. However, the split did cause the insulation to not work efficiently, which in the long run cost us more money.

The water heater we bought as a replacement was a fifty gallon with a foamed insulation. It stays cool to the touch.

NOTE: If you touch the outside of your water heater and it is warm, consider adding a blanket to help reduce heat loss, which in turn saves you money. Install per the manufactures instructions.
