Hurricanes - Do You Know What To Do Should One Head Your Way?

Satellite Picture of Hurricane When it comes to hurricanes, it is fairly easy to prepare. In most instances, there is advance warning and time to prepare. I recommend you purchase hurricane shutters for your home that have been fitted to the windows before the storm and are stored and ready for use.

In my experience, the typical thing people do is run to the big box and buy a bunch of plywood to nail over windows. A much better option is have metal shutters already fitted to your home covering windows and glass doors. When storing your shutters, write the location on the shutter where it goes.

It is very important to also add your name and house number to each shutter.

  • Why write the location as to where the shutter goes on it you ask? Because when it is time to put them on your house again, you will not have to spend the time to figure out which shutter goes on which window.
  • Why write your address on each shutter? Because several years ago we had a house in Florida we were selling. The house was empty because we had already moved to Tennessee. A hurricane was heading toward Florida.

I drove to Florida with the intent to install our metal shutters that we had left at the Florida house. However, when I arrived there were no shutters. Looking around the neighborhood, I saw my shutters on a neighbor’s house. The neighbor denied they were mine.

I reason I knew they were mine is because I had put the window location on each of the shutters. However, I had put nothing to identify them as mine such as our address or name. So, my neighbor installed them on his house. He did not use the bolt holes or the tracks that came with them. Those items were still in our shed. He simply shot nails into his walls to hang them.

So, make sure you identify each of your shutters by putting at least your address on each of them.

The metal shutters help keep wind damage to a minimum and after the fact, they help to reduce vandalism and looting.

Hurricane Aftermath Also, keep trees and shrubbery trimmed in a manner where they will not fall and cause damage. Trees falling on power lines are always causing problems.

Loose items in your yard also become missiles, so put them away.

In bygone years they always advised cracking a window open on the leeward side or the side away from the storm to keep the pressure equalized. I always did, but I not sure exactly if it did any good or not.

Do not forget to stock up on food, water, a battery operated TV and a good first aid kit should you decide to stay in your home and ride out the hurricane.

Finally, should you be told to evacuate, DO IT. It can save your life!
