Insurance Information and Other Important Family Documents

Family Papers How are you going to keep your insurance information, emergency information, family pictures and other important documents safe if you are in the middle of a disaster. Who do you call for help? Hopefully you have a list attached to the front of your refrigerator or behind a kitchen cabinet door with emergency numbers on it.

Inside the telephone book cover used to be a good area to look. Calling 911 is good to contact police, fire and ambulance. However, who do you call if you smell gas? It is not 911. Gas is not an emergency to them. Of course, in the event of a major disaster, how many 911 dispatchers will be there be to answer all the telephone calls. How many police, fire and ambulances can respond. They all have limited resources.

Do you have the telephone number of your insurance company and your policy numbers handy? Most people do not. Who is your insurance agent? Who is your insurance company? Most people have to think about this information. It is something we take for granted as we, hopefully, do not use it often.

But when you need it, you need the information now. When is the last time you had a conversation with your insurance agent? Did you discuss what is and is not covered? What you believe to be covered and what your insurance company considers covered are not necessarily the same. For instance, do you read the all your insurance information changes the company sends you every so often? These are changes to your policy. Get an insurance check up now, before you need to file a claim.

How to Keep Important Documents:

Get a large zip lock bag and put your insurance information inside. Make copies of your driver’s licenses, automobile insurance cards, credit cards, health insurance cards, bank cards and anything else of importance you may have.

Make copies of the front AND the back of everything. Place the copies in a water-proof bag in your bug-out-bag for quick access. If your primary cards get lost, this information will help you get replacements and help you maintain control of your accounts.

Family pictures:

Family Pictures Often if you encounter a disaster, all the cardboard boxes stuffed full of family albums, bibles, books and stacks of pictures are damaged. Before a disaster happens is the time to preserve these memories not after the fact. Look at the pictures the news shows after a disaster has occurred, there are always people rummaging thru the debris looking for family memories. So get your family’s memories in order. Take a few of the important ones and put in a water-proof bag and also put in your bug-out-bag. Now is the time to put them together in one location so they are easy to gather as you are running out of your home.
