Our Kitty Litter Box Saga

Here is our kitty litter box saga. We have two cats and we recently tried to make our life a little easier by getting an automated cat litter box that cleans the litter after each use and deposits the waste into a waste container for easy removal.

After some research, the "Litter Maid Electra Elite" looked like the best option. It was large enough for multiple cats and runs on AC power. We also bought a LaBistro dry food feeder. It feeds them 1/2 cup at 6AM and another 1/2 cup at 5:30PM. The cats adapted to the feeder in a day. However the litter box is another story.

They would have nothing to do with the new automated kitty litter box.

So,

  • We tried special catnip infused litter to attract then. That was no good.
  • We took their old litter box away. That was a mistake. They just peed and pooped on the floor in front of the litter box.
  • We thought they maybe were missing their privacy because their old box was covered. So, we bought a Cabana for the new automated box, that was a waste of $35.

When I put our male cat inside to get him used to it, I noticed the Cabana was too small because he rubbed his back on the cover.

  • I, therefore, made a larger cover from PVC pipe and an old sheet. That was a waste of time and more money.
So, for the time being, we have put the two boxes next to each other. Now, if we could just figure how to convince the cats to use the automated box…

Below are the pictures of the original and the new litter boxes and also pictures of the cover building process.

So, here is the old kitty box on the left and the new one on the right.

Finally, below are pictures of the finished covering so the cats can have some "privacy".

And they still do not use the new box!!!

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get our cats to use their new kitty litter box, please let us know!

Or if you have a funny kitty story to share!
