Information on Measuring Sticks | |||||||
Question from David:
I would like some information about the measuring stick or height stick. My computer will not go to that web site for some reason. Do you think it would be appropriate to check wire heights on job sites? If so, where can I get it and how much?
Answer from Dave:
Hi David, thanks for the inquiry.
My height sticks are old but still very useful. Depending upon your application, they can get expensive very fast. I used them during my days with the telephone company as a manager over the OSP (outside plant department). We designed routes for fiber optic cables. The poles can measure from 30 to 40 feet high.
If you are working near high voltage, make sure you use insulated materials - fiberglass for instance. The higher you go, the more expensive they get. Look at Lineman's Equipment.com for options.
What exactly are you measuring? Most of the applications for these sticks is outside plant like the heights of wire/cables above streets, driveways, other wires etc. If you are just measuring wires in the house, there are many shorter sticks.
Answer from David:
We are in the refuse business. I am looking for something we can measure wire heights on customer sites to make sure we have enough clearance for trucks and for dumping and loading etc. I would think from 10- 30 feet would be fine. The legal height is 13' 6" and we need about 28' in the dumping area.
Answer from Dave:
I understand. I have rehabbed houses and I usually would bring in a 30 yard dumpster. Measuring before moving the dumpster is a great idea. Power, telephone and cable drops are never at the legal height.
These measuring sticks sometimes show up at pawn shops at good prices because no one knows what they are. There are some on eBay too. Make sure to get the insulated model. Do not make this a shocking experience.
Good luck.
