Replacing a Stem Valve on the Hot Water Handle in the Shower

by ajkermode

How extensive of work does this entail?

I attempted to replace the stem valve on my hot water handle in the shower. When I took the old stem valve off, the piece that meets the "O" ring of the stem valve had broken off (the piece in the main line). Is this a quick and easy fix for a first time project or is this more extensive?

Answer from Dave:

Typically, the stem valve can be replaced as a unit. The pipe from the hot water and the connection to the shower head are fixed with the seat being the common meeting point. The valve can be replaced as an entire unit. Take the valve to Lowes or Home Depot and the plumbing department can match what you have. From there, it is simply a matter of screwing the new valve back in place. Look at the seat in the wall and make sure it is not damaged.

Good luck!
