Spring Cleaning Tips for People with Allergies or Asthma

By Robin at Seventh Generation

spring cleaning tips The weather is finally cooperating, bringing us out of our winter hibernation. But all that time spent indoors has left our homes covered with layers of dirt, dust, and allergens. Here are a few simple steps you can take to clean the air and surfaces inside your home.

Dust Carefully
Use a damp cloth. It will absorb dust better than a dust mop, which will shake particles back into the air. Rinse the cloth carefully, and pay special attention to corners, windows, blinds, and picture rails.

Vacuum With a Hepa Filter
Use a special dust-trapping filter, and keep the windows open while the vacuum is turned on.

Give Away Things You Don't Need
Cutting down on clutter will also cut down on dust. When possible, store belongings in drawers or cabinets rather than out in the open.

Check and Clean All Filters
These include filters for air conditioners, air purifiers, and humidifiers.

Watch Out for Mold
Inspect shower curtains and other likely breeding grounds.

Be Picky About Store-Bought Cleaners
Read the labels closely, and try to buy products that are completely free of dyes, masking agents, and fragrances. Seventh Generation carries a line of Free & Clear products.
