Test Cables After Your Data Cable Installation

You will want to test cables after you install the data cable in your home office. Testing devices can range from simple voltmeters to complex devices that test the cable in seconds. Shown below are two of the many testers that I have used over the last couple of decades.

ModTap circa 1990 Link Master circa 2001

The latest is the Ideal VDV MultiMedia. This one can test data cables and voice (telephone) AND coax cables for your TV, all in one tester. VDV tester circa 2005

The display identifies the problem instantly. Remember the broken wires in solid cable in our page about data cable installations in a home office? The VDV MultiMedia identifies that problem quickly.

Of course, you can spend more money and purchase a certified cable tester that verifies more than you need to know and will give you a printout for you records. That device can not be purchased at the big box and can run into thousands of dollars. Do you really it? Of course not.

The really interesting thing is that all three of these cable testers were right around a $100 when new. Almost the same amount of money and the features keep improving. Technology is getting cheaper all the time. A hundred years ago technology was expensive and labor was cheap, now it is the opposite. The more you can do for yourself, the cheaper the project becomes.
