Water Damaged Ceiling
Custom Search
This question comes from Lois who lives in the United States: Question: Great web site. My question is how do you repair a water damaged ceiling? Answer: Before you do anything, find out what caused the ceiling to get damaged and fix that problem first. How bad is the water damage? It can be something as easy as a dark stain from the water or as major as the ceiling falling out? If you have dark stain, get some Kilz UpShot overhead stain sealer (it is pre aged to match most aged ceilings). If it is white, put some drop cloths down and simply spray the affected area.
From this point, it gets harder. If you must replace the damaged drywall, put some drop cloths down and remove the damaged drywall. If there is attic space above, there should be insulation in that space. If it got wet, discard it. Trim the area of damaged drywall out and insert a new piece or pieces, tape the edges and make the finish match the original ceiling finish (example: plaster, popcorn or flat). Install a new vapor barrier and add insulation above.
Hope this helps.
