What to Know Before Buying a Home Replacement Window

One of the best ways to get the best replacement window products available is to ask the right question to the sales person. First, you never want to purchase a mechanically fastened window. All frames and sashes should be fusion welded. This ensures the maximum energy efficiency and durability.

Second important factor is the spacing between each window pane. This may sound minuscule, but the greater the space in between, the more argon gas that can be inserted and the more sound proof the window.

Argon gas is an odorless, colorless and tasteless non toxic gas which is six times denser than air. It is used to replace air between the glass panes to reduce temperature transfer. This creates a more energy efficient window.

Lo-E (pronounced low E) is another significant factor for when it comes to the energy efficiency of your windows. Lo-E refers to glass with transparent metallic oxide coating onto or into a glass surface. The coating allows short-wave energy to pass through, but reflects long-wave infrared energy, which improves the U-value. In other words, it provides great energy efficiency by reflecting sunlight. This feature also offers protection to valuables inside the home that are subject to bleaching caused by sun such as furniture, paintings, carpet, etc.

Warranty is also a considerable benefit to understand. In many cases, a do-it-yourself install can void a warranty. Be especially careful not to screw the screws into your window frames as this often voids your warranty.

Make sure the company you work with explains the scenarios in which your warranty can become void. Many warranties nowadays are transferable. This means when you sell your home, you can tell prospective buyers that the windows have a lifetime warranty.

Safety is another issue that is important about which to inquire. How strong is the glass? Cardinal Glass is the best in the industry. Does the window have safety latches that can be pulled out and keep people outside and kids safely inside?

Many times you have more options than you might expect when it comes to how the window opens and looks. Most companies just show a double hung vinyl replacement window because it is the most common, and the easiest to install.

You can be more creative than that though if you are inclined to think creatively and view some good design ideas at www.abcwincharleston.com. Besides the designs on the home page, the gallery tab will also show types of windows.
